when is garlic ready to harvest?

    Garlicready

Garlic is ready for harvest when many of the spiky long leaves begin to turn brown. This happens here in the Midwest at the end of June or beginning of July. For me on this happy independence day, I am rewarded with a great harvest of fresh hard neck and soft neck garlic. I will clean away the dirt and allow the garlic to dry and store it until I need it. I can save out a few of the largest bulbs to plant in the fall and begin the cycle again.

    don't allow garlic to flower

    Flowers_2

Prune the flowers from garlic so that all of the energy of the plant goes into the bulb and not into flowering. These garlic flowers are great in arrangements or they are edible as well and can go into soups or salads.
